Frequently Asked
Questions
What is WoodguardŽ?
WOODguardŽ is an EPA registered, highly durable, one coat, oil-based, wood
preservative designed for sloping and vertical exterior log homes and siding
surfaces.
Clear WOODguardŽ is a transparent greenish liquid that dries clear depending
on the wood substrate which enriches and darkens wood’s natural color. It
contain colorless titanium dioxide (TiO2) and “trans-iron oxides” UV blockers to
resist damaging ultra violet rays. WOODguardŽ forms a semi-transparent polymer
which binds the pigments to the wood while allowing the wood to breathe.
Wood tones can be maintained with the addition of machine universal colorants
or tints. Un-tinted, Clear and Honey Base WOODguardŽ products
require the addition of pigments for maximum resistance to UV light. A minimum
of 4 oz. by weight of colored pigments are required for maximum UV
protection. There are no colored pigments in Woodguard Clear.
How much will I need?
Initial applications: one gallon of WOODguardŽ will cover approximately 150 square feet of rough sawn cypress
or about 200 square feet of smooth milled siding or logs. Always apply as much
WOODguardŽ as can be absorbed by the wood. Only one coat is required.
However, that one coat must be applied to the point of refusal.
To use a rough calculation, multiply the length times the height of the home
times 1.4 (Area = Length X Height X 1.4). The 0.4 takes into account average
allowances for window and door openings.
Be aware that wood warm to the touch will absorb more WOODguard than will
cold wood. Old weathered wood will absorb more than new unseasoned wood. If
possible, plan
treatment accordingly for maximum results and longevity.
Is WOODguardŽ easy as well as safe to use?
WOODguardŽ is easy to apply via brush, coarse spray or roller. A garden pump-up
sprayer is recommended; back brushed to an even coat. Just apply to the point of refusal. WOODguardŽ does its job with
just one initial coat and cleans up easily with mineral spirits. WoodguardŽ should not be applied with an airless
sprayer.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of the
active ingredient in WOODguardŽ for incidental food contact and for use as a
preservative for wood that is used or intended for use in packaging,
transporting or holding of raw agricultural products.
When should WOODguardŽ be applied?
The best time to apply WOODguardŽ is when the minimum night-time temperature is 50°F or higher. Do not apply during or right
after a rain. The wood surface must be dry before you initiate application.
WOODguardŽ has a cumulative effect inside the wood with each application.
Retreat when the surface discolors and darkens when sprinkled with water OR when
colors needs refreshing from years of sun exposure. The south and west sides may
require treatment 1 to 2 years before the north and east sides.
How should I prepare the wood surface for WOODguardŽ?
Before applying WOODguardŽ, ensure the surface is clean and that the wood is dry
(less than 18% moisture content).
Weathered wood should be power washed with one quart of bleach and three quarts of water with 4 oz. of Tri-Sodium Phosphate (TSP) is the preferred method.
See the
Preparation and Maintenance brochure for
additional information.
is WOODguardŽ VOC compliant?
WOODguardŽ is VOC compliant and meets all current state and federal air quality
requirements. The active ingredient, copper 8 quinolinolate is suitable for use on wood that may have incidental food
contact. WOODguardŽ has very low odor during application and after it is cured it is virtually odorless.
What are the benefits of using WOODguardŽ?
WOODguardŽ penetrates deep into the wood fibers, curing below the wood surface to enhance
and preserve the natural
beauty of wood. WOODguard's oil formula provides long term protection from
damage caused by the sun’s UV rays, provides water repellency and protects against cupping, curling and warping.
WOODguardŽ controls
fungus, wood decay, mold, mildew, and is toxic termites and anabiid powder post beetles with its EPA registered wood
preservative Copper-8-Quinolinolate.
How does WOODguardŽ work?
WOODguard's oil formula penetrates deeply into the wood structure, coating the wood
cells where it molecularly bonds into the wood. WOODguardŽ cures in a liquid state and remains flexible. WOODguardŽ
will not harden or crack through wide temperature and moisture extremes.
How is WOODguardŽ Rated?
An independent study of the log home industry concluded that WOODguardŽ is the exterior
wood preservative and stain most recommended to consumers by builder/dealers nationwide. The survey also revealed that more
log home models were treated with WOODguardŽ than any other product during their previous application.
WOODguardŽ exceeds the National Wood Window and Door Manufacturers
Association and Federal Spec. 572 Swellometer water repellency requirements.
WOODguardŽ will not chip, crack or peel. When applied as directed, it leaves
a uniform, “streak-free” appearance.
What type of caulk should I use?
A high quality oil based caulk is recommended, especially when applied over
newly cured WOODguardŽ.
My house has 3,000 square feet of exterior surface area to treat. My contractor applied
7 gallons of WOODguardŽ. Three months later it looks like it's gone. What's wrong?
Way too little WOODguardŽ was applied. Always apply WOODguardŽ to the
point of refusal. If you can't get new wood to accept at least a gallon of product for each 175 square foot area,
suspect a mill glaze problem. Review the
Preparation and Maintenance Guide brochure
for recommendations.
The WOODguardŽ on my house turned considerably darker than the color shown in pictures and on the
WOODguardŽ website.
What's wrong?
Nothing is wrong! WOODguardŽ goes on VERY dark and lightens considerably during the
cure period. If your WOODguardŽ is NOT DARK upon initial application, this is an indication that you are not applying it to the
point of refusal and are not getting a proper treatment.
Should I add an additional mildewcide to my WOODguardŽ? What kind is recommended?
If the exposure conditions are going to be very hot and humid or otherwise adverse,
additional mildewcide can be added to provide extended mildew control. WOODguardŽ cannot prevent the reoccurrence of mold and
mildew on extremely dirty surfaces or inadequately ventilated areas. If you decide to add a mildewcide, we recommend a
chlorothalonil-based additive such as M-1Ž.
