The individual states of the United States have long
recognized the importance of trees, and each state has selected
a particular tree with which to identify itself. This has been
done by acts of of the state legislatures, by garden clubs, by
vote of the people, or, in some cases, because it is the most
prominent or most valuable tree growing in that state. All of
the state trees, except the Hawaii state tree, are native to the
state in which they are designated.
