Recommendations for Finishing Cypress Siding

Before finishing, repair all nail holes and surface irregularities. All surfaces should be clean and caulking should be in good condition. Seasoned or kiln dried cypress siding should be finished promptly at the time of installation to protect against moisture absorption, discoloration from rain, and mildew. However under no circumstance should siding be finished when it is wet.

Selecting Primer and Paint

Due to the natural preservative oils in Cypress, an oil based primer is recommended. Use a high-quality primer compatible with the paint being used - most paints will require an oil-based alkyd primer. For the finish coat, high quality/100% resin acrylic/latex paints are recommended. Certain paints contain water-sensitive polymers and/or surfactants that might absorb moisture, causing the siding to swell or creating an environment suitable for biological degradation. These additives are present in a variety of paints, at different price levels, and their presence is not necessarily reflected on the label. The only safe approach is to use a paint specifically recommended by a paint manufacturer for use on exterior wood siding.  Light-colored finishes reflect heat more than dark colors and reduce the possibility of shrinking, checking, warping, and loosening of nails.

Prime Before Installing

After Cypress has achieved equilibrium moisture content and before it is installed, a coating on all surfaces is recommended. The type of coating will vary with final finish selected and will protect the wood from water penetration, help prevent staining caused by mildew and extractives and can increase the service life of top coats. To maintain the bright appearance of newly milled wood we recommend the use of a high quality synthetic oil based preservative & sealer (such as WOODguard®) to retard mildew stains and discolorations that feed on organic linseed and other natural oils.

Check with your paint

dealer to make sure that the pre-finish coat you select is compatible with the intended finish coat. For example, clear water repellants should not be used where the intended finish is a bleaching oil.

Recommended Priming Procedures for Cypress Siding:

Type of Finish Coat

Recommended Priming Coat

Natural and semi-transparent stains

Coat all surfaces including cuts and ends with an alkyd oil based sealer.

Solid color stains and paints

Coat all surfaces with an alkyd oil based primer. Alternatively, use a clear oil based sealer on back of siding and primer on the face and edges .

Bleaching Oils

Prime all surfaces with a coat of the bleaching oil.
